What is Botox?

Botox is a natural purified protein that is injected in very low doses into overactive muscles. Botox works by blocking the release of acetylcholine, the natural chemical produced by the body that causes muscles to contract. These neuromodulators are commonly used for medical and cosmetic purposes.  By relaxing the muscles, botox can help reduce facial wrinkles in the upper third of the face (the “11’s lines” between the eyebrows and the horizontal forehead lines), “crows feet” at the corner of eyes, and wrinkles around the mouth.  Botox can also be used to relax overreactive jaw muscles and those along the side of the forehead that causes migraines and TMJ issues. The effects of Botox/Xeomin typically last two to four months but can last as long as six months.  There can be a visible smoothing of wrinkles as early as three days from injection, but can take two weeks for it to take full effect.
